In the valleys all around Dufftown stands an assemblage
of whisky distilleries. In earlier times it was illegal to burn whisky.
So the distillers searched for well hidden places with plenty of water
in very isolated valleys. The smoke from drying the barley and the distillation
itself, nevertheless, betrayed many of them to the authority. The noble
distillate and the location of the distilleries have kept until today a
breath of secret.
