Iceland

Red / black: the ring road around the main part of the island. The road is signed with the number 1 and the whole distance around is approximatly 1'500 km (1'000 miles). In the interior of the ring road you'll find only Jeep tracks (apart the south west). These tracks open only during the summer months of July/August, depending on the snow situation. The white spots on the map are glaciers. Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Europe (8'300 km2). All other glaciers of Europe summarized will find place in it.

Nearly all villages are situated along the coastline, only in the south west between Reykjavik and Vik, where the climate is more mild and agriculture is possible. All other parts of Iceland live mostly from fishing and extensive pastureland.
